CLUES

Iburst back into the first-class dining car as Cho stood at the other end, hands on his round Santa belly.

“Ho ho ho! I do believe it’s time to begin our Christmas auction!” All the passengers had turned their attention toward my friend, with Dom, Al, Calvin, and Leo milling about in the aisle, refilling drinks and clearing plates. I nibbled my lip and rose on my toes to peer around them but didn’t spot Prescott or Kurt. They were probably back in the kitchen. I sighed, antsy to tell them about the gift tag I’d found in the trash, but knew it’d take me some time to wind past everyone to get to them.

Morgan, the other witch on the supernatural council, stood with her big barn owl perched on top of her head. “I know we’ve all suffered a shock today, but I’m sure Adrian Davies would have wanted us to continue with our charitable cause.”

I glanced around, trying to gauge the diners’ reactions. I caught a few raised brows and some quiet murmurs, but no one seemed overly offended that we were continuing with the auction. If it hadn’t been intended as a trap for Darius, I wasn’t sure we’d have done so, but no one openly questioned it at least.

Morgan’s owl flapped its wings, a few feathers floating away. “We’re all here to support the renovation of Darius’s old compound into a school for our supernatural youth. So when you bid, bid high—think of the children.” She winked and handed Cho a card.

He tugged his red cap back and read, “Up first, we have a custom potion made for you by Morgan herself.”

The redheaded witch raised a finger. “Now, no love potions or anything unsavory—otherwise, the choice is yours. I can make you appear younger, have better luck, or get someone to tell the truth.”

Hands shot up all around the train car.

“A hundred pounds,” an older man shouted.

“Three hundred!” countered a woman in a fur wrap.

“Five hundred!” A young fellow in a sharp suit chuckled. “I could use some good luck.”

Teddy, Brenda, and Linda sat at their table in downcast silence. I scanned the rows and found Samantha slumped in her seat, glassy-eyed and red-nosed, looking absolutely miserable. I thought back to what we’d discovered on Adrian’s phone, the texts between him and Teddy, and my visions. It gave me an idea.

As the auction continued, I caught Dom’s eye and waved the beefy butler over. He nearly had to turn sideways to fit his broad shoulders down the center aisle. When he reached me, he raised a questioning brow.

I leaned close and lowered my voice to a whisper. “Before I ask this, please don’t be offended.”

He pinched his thick brows together, but I pressed on. “Are you any good at pickpocketing?”

He recoiled, and I waved my hands. “No—not like now, but… in the past?”

He’d had a rough life. His abusive father had kicked him out of the house after discovering Dom’s psychic abilities, and the poor guy had drifted around through his youth, homeless, barely scraping by.
